How long does it take?
A realistic time/budget is usually between 1-2 hours. Depending on the complexity of the problem, it may take considerably less time or we may need more time. After the initial agreed time we may have a solution for you or if not then our initial assessment will have helped us to formulate a clearer plan as to how to proceed.
This may lead to multiple appointments or keeping your Jaguar in the workshop for an extended period of time. Jaguars have complex layers of technology and sometimes multiple layers of testing and/or repairs may be required to correctly diagnose and resolve the issue.
Diagnostic fault codes
We are frequently asked for fault code reads or to "just plug the computer in so I know what's wrong" or "how much for a fault code read". Yes we can retrieve fault codes for a standard charge but unless you understand what the code means then it is of very little use.
What someone may be asking for and what is actually required to get to the source of the problem can be very different. We will discuss the issues with you and between us we will work together to meet expectations.
Diagnostic equipment
Other comments which can be associated with fixes after diagnostics are "that didn't take you long" or "is that all it was". The journey to get to that particular repair is not always as obvious as first thought.
Many thousands of pounds are invested in equipment to enable us to trace the fault and endless hours of research, studying and data collection have taken place for us to gain the experience to diagnose the problem correctly.
Equipment that may be used during the diagnostic process are Jaguar SDD, Autologic, oscilloscope, smoke machine amongst others. We also invest heavily in training.
A Diagnostic Assessment
We begin a diagnostic assessment with a calm and methodical approach. We deal with a lot of cars that have had previous attempts at fixing problems, and sometimes the symptoms may be dealt with by haphazard adjustments or having random parts fitted.
If no logic or method has been applied then no one is any wiser as to how the issue occurred, or if it was sufficiently resolved. This can often work out to be a more expensive way of attempting to sort a problem as parts may have been fitted that weren't required, time is wasted and budgets spent!
We frequently see Jaguars that have been to multiple garages which are perceived to be cheaper and have a lower labour rate but unfortunately the faults have not been rectified and so money is wasted. It will prove more cost efficient to bring your Jaguar to someone who has the knowledge and experience on these systems. We have an extremely high success rate for first time fixes.
Issues to check
A comprehensive talk with you, the Jaguar owner experiencing the fault is our first step. It is advantageous to both parties that we have as much information as possible. So before you bring your car into us think about the problems you are experiencing and consider the following:
- Warning lights/messages displayed.
- Frequency of problem.
- Duration of problem.
- Ambient conditions when the fault occurs (wet, dry, cold etc.)
- Engine temperature.
- Driving conditions (light throttle, changing gear, braking, turning etc.)
- Any previous repairs carried out.
- Previous testing/attempts to solve the problem.
- Brief history of the car.
It is also important that we are able to contact you without delay when we have a query or need authorisation for the next stage.
Even with all the diagnostic equipment that we have invested in, the expertise of our technician is paramount. Fault codes that may have been logged are not usually very specific but gives us a starting point with our assessment. Experience and knowledge are essential to know how best to progress with the assessment.
Jaguar Diagnostic Specialists
We will then plan how to proceed from this point and carry out testing methodically and logically. We will never replace any components unless we have a reason to do so and that we can prove it is faulty.
Sometimes it will be necessary to repair/replace an item before we can continue testing effectively. Problems are sometimes revealed in layers.
It is important to be aware that sometimes the process can become quite costly as it requires a top level of skill and expertise and other valuable resources.
Sometimes to access connectors/wiring/components for testing they may be in hard to reach places which require some stripping out. If we are allowed the time and the budget we will solve your issue.
If you would like any more information regarding our diagnostic services then please do feel free to get in touch, we will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Jaguar car diagnostics is the process of using advanced computer systems and diagnostic tools to analyse the performance and condition of your vehicle.
Modern Jaguars are equipped with sophisticated onboard computers that control everything from the engine to the braking system.
During a diagnostic test, a technician connects to your car’s computer to retrieve error codes and data, which can pinpoint issues within various systems, such as the engine, transmission, electrical components, and safety features.
This thorough process helps detect problems early, ensuring your Jaguar continues to run smoothly and efficiently.
It’s generally recommended to have diagnostic checks performed at least once a year or more frequently if you're noticing issues like warning lights, strange noises, or a decrease in performance.
If your Jaguar is due for a scheduled service or has accumulated significant mileage, a diagnostic check can be a proactive way to catch potential problems before they turn into major repairs.
Regular checks help maintain your vehicle’s performance, increase its lifespan, and ensure that any minor issues are resolved quickly before they become more costly.
While you can purchase basic OBD-II scanners for home use, these tools don’t offer the level of detail or accuracy that a professional diagnostic test can provide.
Jaguar vehicles use specialised software and diagnostic equipment that can connect to your car’s complex systems, which aren’t accessible through consumer-level devices.
A trained technician will be able to interpret the error codes and system data properly, providing a more comprehensive and reliable analysis of your vehicle's condition. To ensure your Jaguar gets the attention it needs, it’s best to leave diagnostics to the experts.
During a comprehensive diagnostic test, your Jaguar's key systems are thoroughly checked to ensure everything is functioning correctly.
These systems include the engine, transmission, braking and safety systems (such as airbags and anti-lock braking), electrical components, fuel system, exhaust, and emissions controls.
The test also evaluates your vehicle’s battery, charging system, and even advanced features like climate control and infotainment.
By examining all of these areas, a diagnostic test provides a complete picture of your vehicle’s health, helping to catch any issues that might affect performance or safety.
Regular diagnostic checks are essential for keeping your Jaguar in top condition. These checks help identify potential issues early, which can prevent unexpected breakdowns and costly repairs.
By catching problems while they’re still small, you can avoid major repairs down the road. Regular diagnostics also ensure that your car runs as efficiently as possible, which can improve fuel economy and reduce wear on key components.
Furthermore, addressing issues like faulty sensors or misfiring engines can enhance performance and driving comfort. For owners who want to preserve their vehicle’s value, regular diagnostics are a key part of keeping their Jaguar running smoothly.
A typical Jaguar diagnostic test usually takes between 30 minutes to an hour.
The length of the test can vary depending on the complexity of your vehicle’s systems and whether the technician detects any issues that require further investigation.
If the diagnostic reveals problems that need additional attention or repair, the overall process may take longer. However, the test itself is quick and non-invasive and provides valuable insights into your vehicle's health.
A diagnostic test can reset your Jaguar's warning lights, but only after addressing the root cause of the issue. If the test identifies a problem, such as a sensor malfunction or low fluid levels, the technician will fix it or recommend a solution.
Once the issue is resolved, the warning lights can be reset. However, if the underlying issue isn’t fixed, the lights may come back on.
It’s important to remember that warning lights are there for a reason, and simply resetting them without resolving the issue could lead to further complications.
Whether a diagnostic test is covered under your Jaguar’s warranty depends on the nature of the issue and the specific terms of your warranty.
If your vehicle is still under warranty and the diagnostic test is to investigate a potential defect or issue covered by the warranty, the cost of the test may be included.
However, if the diagnostic test is for routine maintenance or an issue not related to a warranty-covered part, you may be responsible for the cost.
We recommend reviewing your warranty documents or contacting your Jaguar dealership to understand what is included in your coverage.
The cost of a Jaguar diagnostic test typically ranges from £100 to £200, depending on factors such as the model of your vehicle, the complexity of the diagnostic process, and the labour involved.
Some tests may require additional time if deeper issues need to be identified or repaired.
The investment in a diagnostic test can ultimately save you money by detecting problems early before they develop into more serious and expensive repairs.
For a more accurate estimate, it’s best to contact us directly, as prices may vary based on your vehicle's specific needs.
While a diagnostic test itself won’t directly improve performance, it can help identify underlying issues that may be hindering your Jaguar’s performance.
For example, the test might reveal engine misfires, fuel system inefficiencies, or issues with the transmission that are impacting your car’s driving experience.
By addressing these problems early, you can restore and even improve your vehicle’s overall performance.
Regular diagnostics ensure that all systems are working as they should, which can result in a smoother driving experience, better fuel efficiency, and longer-lasting performance.
